Is soul food the most unhealthiest food you can possibly eat?

I mean seriously to me its an artery clog waiting to happen. I grew up on it unfortunately i had to fake the funk and become a vegan so i wasnt forced to eat it. Even the veggies are cooked in an unhealthy manner. Greens are cooked in hamhockes and pork salt, the salt in the veggies raises my blood pressure just looking at it.

What food culture is unhealthier if you can think of one?

I know the history of sould food it stems from slaves being fed the scraps and left overs but slavery was abolished centuries ago and so should soul food. It taste good only because bad things always taste better.

I would like to take issue with you. I love soul food and there are definitely healthier alternatives to making it. I have replaced the ham hock with turkey wings, but in the last few years in an effort to use less meat(poultry included), I am using the saute method and chick broth to add flavor to my vegetables and still call it soul food. There are those who hang onto old remedies, but you can alter any recipe with a little fantasy and ingenuity. With beans, I do like to add a little meat, they can sometimes be flat in flavor without it. But the additional of alot herbs can make it alot more exciting. Including and not without the carrot. It sweetness is a wonderful addition. Sometimes, I add a small dried chili pepper for a little “zing.”

But slagging off our culture, and past dietary constraints is not necessary to prove a point. The dutch have a history of pouring pork fat over their potatoes and calling it gravy. But we mustn’t forget, meat was not a commodity for everyone and that might be the only way for people to get their protein and fat. There are those that still do it, and it is considered today to be most unhealthy. The Germans, cook their potatoes in the meat fat and it is divine. So, there are alot cultures that eat things that would not be considered “healthy” or “in vogue”. It remains a personal choice.
